listen cyan fades first
16mm projector with found loop, altered film gate, glass columns 2016
The loss of colour in aging film is caused by the cyan dyes being more vulnerable to fading, leaving only magenta and yellow behind. An arbitrary film loop creates an absurdist mantra celebrating sound, while the blurred reddish image, robbed of its intention, is cast off in the distance. Two columns testify to the sprockets that drive the film forward on one side and the optical soundtrack on the other. By employing a customised gate the film's edges are the focus, offering a form and shape to that which is normally invisible.
